We’re off on our 2026 virtual cycle/walk/run challenge!
Second update from
Speedy Springbok …
Hello all you trekkers. I hope that your trekking is going according to plan. I’m assuming that your muscles are not aching too much as we have had to cover less than 100 km – a gentle warm-up!
We have travelled through the magnificent winelands and some of us might even have taken a short detour to experience the magic of Franschhoek, founded by the French Huguenots in 1688 and home to some of South Africa’s best known wine estates.
Our first stop in Cape Town is Hout Bay, on the Atlantic coast. Jan van Riebeeck, founder of the Cape colony described the forest of Hout Bay as being the finest in the world and it was Van Riebeeck who gave Hout Bay its present name (Hout is Dutch for wood). In the second half of the 19th century forestry and agriculture gave way to fishing and a number of fish factories were established there. While it is still home to many fishing boats, it is now better known as a vibrant tourist area.
Our partner there is Hout Bay Rotary Club. The Rotarians, led by Keith Bull and Jeanine Evans, together with the amazing Liz Huckle, the local community health visitor and member of the Lion’s Club, have developed close links with many of the preschools in Hangberg and the densely populated township of Imizamu Yethu, and they are now providing e’Pap breakfasts for over 900 children!
It is hard to leave such a beautiful place but leave we must – this is not a holiday! Fortunately, the next stop is only 20 km away but it will be a tough climb going over Chapman’s Peak Drive – reckoned to be one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
P.S. Please do send us pictures of your activities – we would love to share them in our posts and inspire our fellow trekkers.
